Anna Boyiazis is a documentary photographer currently working on a project in Southwest Uganda. She's been traveling independently to this remote pocket of Africa since 2006, underscoring the urgent need for educational opportunities for girls in developing nations.
Recipient of both the 2012 Eddie Adams Workshop XXV Los Angeles Times Assignment Award and a 2011 City of Los Angeles Individual Artist Fellowship, her work highlighting humanitarian issues has been exhibited, projected and published internationally. Exhibitions include The Curve: Center Santa Fe’s Award Recipients, and the 2009 Havana Biennial, Istanbul Photo Festival and Prix de la Photographie Paris (Px3). Projections include the Angkor Photo Festival; Arte Fiera 2012: Women in Multimedia at Spazio Labo’ Centro di Fotografia, Bologna; MOPLA 2013: Month of Photography Los Angeles; and Women’s Work at Kopeikin Gallery, Los Angeles. Publications include burn magazine, La Fábrica and UNICEF Germany. Her work has been recognized by Center, Médecins Sans Frontières, Photocrati Fund and Px3.
Anna’s involvement with photography deepened in 2006, inspiring a mid-career transition into photography. She spent the first sixteen years of her career designing a variety of publications— predominantly books—in close collaboration with international art and architecture organizations. Projects included the design of Morphosis, architecture monograph by Thom Mayne (Phaidon Press), and Paradise Cage: Kiki Smith and Coop Himmelblau (The Museum of Contemporary Art [MOCA], Los Angeles). Anna taught at both Art Center College of Design and the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture, and served a teaching fellowship at the Yale University School of Art, as Head Designer at MOCA and as Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome. Her design work was recognized by The American Center for Design, the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), and Communication Arts, among others. Her work is in the permanent collections of the AIGA Archives at the Denver Art Museum, the UCLA Arts Library Artists' Book Collection, the Yale University Art + Architecture Library and the Yale University Sterling Memorial Library Arts of the Book Collection.
Anna received an MFA from the Yale University School of Art and a BA from the UCLA School of Fine Art. A 2012 Eddie Adams Workshop XXV alumna, she has studied under David Alan Harvey, Antonin Kratochvil and Ron Haviv. Anna is based in California, where she was born and raised by her family of Aegean Islanders. She is currently editing her photographs from her recent trip to Uganda, where she plans to continue further developing her work.
